High Demand
The High Demand pattern is a manipulative psychological tactic formally categorized under “Social Proof” and “Urgency.” It functions by artificially injecting notifications or metrics that claim a large number of other users are concurrently viewing, purchasing, or booking the same item. By creating the illusion of intense competition for an ostensibly limited resource, the interface triggers the user's evolutionary Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO). This cognitive pressure circumvents deliberative cognitive processing and price-comparison behaviors, accelerating the transition from contemplation to an impulsive transaction. The pattern is explicitly deceptive when the displayed metrics are algorithmically fabricated or statistically detached from true backend analytics.
