Complex Language

The Complex Language pattern—also referred to as Legalese, Jargon, or Bafflement—is a linguistic dark pattern formally categorized under “Hiding Information” and “Interface Interference.” It deliberately utilizes overly technical, legalistic, or convoluted vocabulary and extremely long sentence structures to obscure the true meaning of a disclosure, privacy policy, or set of terms. By elevating the required reading comprehension level far beyond that of the average consumer, the interface artificially inflates the cognitive effort required to understand the agreement. This ensures that most users will succumb to decision fatigue and accept business-favorable terms without providing genuine, informed consent, effectively turning the disclosure into a social and cognitive barrier.
